Cistanche Studies
Erectile Dysfunction
A 2016 scientific study investigated the effects of Cistanche on erections. Castrated rats treated with Cistanche experienced a decrease in the time taken to get an erection and an increase in the duration of erections.
Sperm count
A 2015 rodent study found several effects of Cistanche on sperm:
1. Increased sperm count 2.3 to 2.7-fold
2. Increased sperm motility 1.3 to 1.4-fold
3. Decreased abnormal sperm 0.76 to 0.6-fold
Two further scientific studies of Cistanche in rats have observed increased blood concentrations of luteinizing hormone. In men, luteinizing hormone stimulates Leydig cells in the testes to produce testosterone. This acts to support sperm production.
testosterone & testicular health
Researchers have observed increased levels of testosterone in rats after Cistanche treatment. Researchers have also observed increased activation of enzymes that are involved in the synthesis of steroid hormones such as testosterone.
Cistanche has also reversed testicular damage caused by BPA toxicity in rodents. BPA is a chemical that has been used to make many plastics such as food containers since the 1950s. Studies have indicated that BPA exposure may lead to inhibitory effects on testosterone synthesis.
Hair Loss & Dandruff
A 2015 clinical trial of Cistanche found an association with improvements in male-pattern baldness, dandruff and inflammation of the scalp.
More specifically, researchers observed a statistically significant increase in hair density and hair diameter after 16 weeks of Cistanche tubulosa and Laminaria japonica.
DEPRESSION & COGNITIVE HEALTH
Cistanche administration has improved several markers of depression in rodents such as lower levels of stress and higher dopamine. Dopamine is a chemical involved in feelings of motivation and pleasure.
A 2017 rodent study found that Cistanche lead to lower monoamine oxidase activity, which is an enzyme that inactivates dopamine and serotonin. Monoamine oxidase inhibitors are generally used as antidepressant drugs.
Researchers have also found protective effects of Cistanche against Alzheimer's and Parkinson's disease in rodents.
How to use
-
Take Up to Two Capsules Per day
Take up to two 200mg capsules daily, ideally in the morning.
-
WITH OR WITHOUT FOOD
Cistanche can be taken on an empty stomach. The impact of food on supplement absorption is often unpredictable as different compounds within food can interact with the supplement in different ways. However, taking cistanche with food will slow absorption, which can be beneficial if you want the effects to kick in slower and more gradually or if you experience side effects when taking the supplement on an empty stomach.
